In German, there are many words that end in -ung.

This -ung suffix forms nouns from verbs. These nouns normally describe a result from the action of the verb, or some event related to it. All -ung words have the feminine gender.

For example:

  • verbinden = to connect; (die) Verbindung = connection
  • rechnen = to count, to calculate; (die) Rechnung = bill, invoice

This suffix is cognate with English -ing.
