In French, « plus » (‘more’, ‘no more’) can be pronounced /plys/, /plyz/ or /ply/, depending on the context.
Positive Sense
When « plus » is in its positive sense (i.e. ‘more’), then, when it’s followed by an adjective or adverb:
- It’s pronounced /ply/ when the following adjective/adverb doesn’t start with a vowel, or it’s not followed by an adjective/adverb:
- « Cette maison est plus petite que l’autre. »
- « J’aimerais avoir plus de temps. »
- It’s pronounced /plyz‿/ when the following adjective or verb starts with a vowel (liaison):
- « Il est plus ambitieux que nous deux »
When « plus » in its negative sense is not followed by an adjective or adverb, it’s pronounced /plys/:
- « Il faut en faire plus », « en plus, c’est […] », etc.
Negative Sense
When « plus » is in its negative sense, it’s always pronounced /ply/:
- « Je n’en peux plus », « elle n’est plus là », etc.
